The best time to go is in July August or September and while there is snow at the lake all year round it is only safely accessible these three months. In early summer the lower ford of the creek draining Alice Lake can be exciting or potentially dangerous the higher ford is shorter and had a log across it when I hiked up there in June 2014.

Due to its stunning natural beauty it has become one of the most photographed spots in the Sawtooth. This is a fantastic place to stop and take the short detour down to the waterfall viewing area. It is one of the largest and most popular lakes in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in the vicinity of Stanely Idaho.
The route to lake follows a combination of the Iron Creek trail Alpine Way trail and an unmaintained hiking trail to Goat Lake. Goat Lake is positively gorgeous. Stanley Lake is located on the base of McGown Peak at an elevation of 1985 m 6513 ft.

However the area is generally not crowded and frequented by tourists. The hikes to Alice Lake and Goat Lake are both great options for backpacking since the trails are somewhat long and difficult. After you take plenty of pictures and a breather conquer the last 600 feet of your hike up to the pristine shores of Goat Lake.

For a more strenuous hike take the trail to Goat Lake a stunning alpine lake that also passes the largest waterfall in the Sawtooth Mountains.
But compared to other more notable mountain ranges nearby such as the Tetons it is nonetheless just as stunning and dramatic. Sawtooth Lake is must-see for Idaho hikers or any outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Sawtooth National Forest. The shimmering Salmon River in the Sawtooth Valley and another great Idaho mountain range the White Clouds to the east.
The five mile trek to the lake is made worthwhile by breathtaking photogenic alpine lakes and the crisp clean Idaho air. The Sawtooth National Forest located in Central Idaho is not as well known as you may think. I hope that helps.
There are hundreds of lakes in the Sawtooth Mountains most of which have been created by alpine glaciers. However the lake at the end surrounded by mountains is gorgeous. Although its shorter than the previous two hikes we mentioned its a bit harder due to the steepness and a rock scramble at the end.
